<p>My race started in the red zone, in trap 6 surrounded by the other runners aiming for a 4h30m race time. We started bang on 9.45am, and it was only two or three minutes on the race clock before the crowd started to open up and the 26.2 miles of running started.</p>
<p>It was only in the first mile though that I realised I already needed to take a leak, despite having taken advantage of the portaloos twice in the starting enclosure. I think the gallons of water I&#8217;d glugged the day before and all morning weren&#8217;t quite through my system, and that was about to wreck my otherwise perfectly planned and prepared first marathon. I also started the race with a slight cramp in my right thigh, and suspected that the two things were related.</p>
<p>Luckily, the foresight of the race directors had put bathroom breaks every two miles, and I managed to dive into the second batch at mile 4 as a door opened just as I was passing. Perfect timing, and only about 60 seconds lost from my pace. The cramp disappeared almost immediately, and I started to feel really good about my race.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d sucked down my first goo gel at mile 2, and the second at mile 6. I started the race with 5 plus two chocolate and granary energy bars. Planned to meet Kat and the gang outside Gordon Ramsay&#8217;s &#8220;The Narrow&#8221; on the leg into Docklands, so that&#8217;d be an opportunity to replenish my supplies from the extras I left-out for Kat in the morning. From a hydration point of view, I&#8217;d already tested and rejected the Orange Lucozade Sport drinks, so planned to stick to water through the race. It&#8217;s not a good idea to guzzle liquids, so I aimed to take on about a third of a bottle at every two miles. This was a good strategy, but unfortunately left me needing <em>yet another</em> wee-stop before I ran into the crowds of Rotherhithe. Opportunity presented itself in the form of a handy row of bushes just behind the water break of mile 7, and despite being too polite to stare I did notice that it wasn&#8217;t just the boys taking advantage of nature&#8217;s facilities!</p>

<p>I expected to see my first batch of supporters (Duns, Taij and Ram) going through Rotherhithe, but no sign of them in the crowds. Oh well, at least with &#8220;FLUKE&#8221; emblazoned on my running vest I was getting plenty of support from the crowd, most notably a gospel preacher and his congregation just outside Greenwich, &#8220;Hallejulah, go FLUKE&#8221;! Ha haaa!</p>
<p>Hunger pangs started to strike around 10 miles, so without breaking pace I gobbled down the first of my energy bars. It didn&#8217;t take long for the rejuvenated glycogen reserves to kick-in, and before I knew it I was turning North across the Thames over the picturesque Tower Bridge, just short of the marathon halfway point.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d already been liberally soaked and battered by the hail trekking through South London, but with the sun back out on the North side my trainers and kit were nicely drying-out. A good job, as wet socks usually herald blister city. Regularly slurping goo gels was keeping my energy peaking, and at the 15 mile point I was feeling <em>great</em>!</p>
<p>Caught-up with the next gang of friends at Gordon Ramsay&#8217;s &#8220;The Narrow&#8221;, on the last leg into Canary Wharf. I&#8217;d expected to see Kat, my mum, aunt and one of their friend&#8217;s Liz, but only spotted the towering form of the larger than life David and Claire peering over the crowd, with Shen peeking out behind them. Had time for a quick hug and jump up and down, before zapping off towards Docklands. At a post-race catch-up it turns out the whole gang were in attendance, and had been there for over an hour. At the very moment I was on my final approach, the paper bag holding the bottle of Thai &#8220;Snake Whiskey&#8221; Kat gave my mum split from the previous rain. Just as I passed, they were all staring at the rather grim form of a long dead pickled cobra on the pavement! LOL! Kat only managed to get a pic of my backside as I sprinted away at race speed, disappointed that my family hadn&#8217;t shown-up! D&#8217;oh!!</p>
<p>The Docklands leg is longer than most runners expect, but having lapped it several times in training I knew what I was in store for. Even so, there&#8217;s quite a bit of doubling back and forth, and in all the whole circuit takes almost an hour, at my meagre pace at least.</p>

<p>I was sure I was finally going to see Kat at the next planned meeting point alongside Limehouse DLR. Had my eyes peeled for the gang, and the first one I spotted was Shen, wielding Kat&#8217;s Digital SLR. Against all my expectations, I was still feeling fantastic at the 20 mile point, so managed to give a big grin for the camera while I grabbed an armfull of goodies to top-up my dwindling supplies.</p>
<p>Hilariously, this second stop was an opportunity to check-out the awesome supporter shirts Dave and Claire had made in honour of my big race. Great job dude!</p>

<p>On so onto the final stretch West towards Buckingham Palace, and the end of the marathon. A final chocolate bar and goo gel got me as far as Southwark Bridge, but I think the sight of home just across the river and the lure of a far too comfortable sofa was the first sign that my race was turning tough. No amount of chocolate or glycogen gloop was going to make a difference at this point, and the grimmest part of my whole race was felt plodding through the long road tunnel towards Blackfriars Bridge. My average speed had dropped significantly, and this was the point just before mile 24 that I had a rather extended walk through a water stop. Was passed by two rather attractive fellow Shelter supporters as we broke back into the light at the end of the tunnel, and despite the restarting rain that was just enough of a boost to get me back up to pace for the last 2.2 miles to the finish line.</p>
<p>I unexpectedly caught sight of Mei-Mei and the gang as I passed Jubilee Bridge, they were out watching for Lai who was also running his first marathon, and gave me a big yell as I passed them. An awesome pick me up for the final stretch. By this point I was really running on fumes, but with a bit of grit and determination I managed to get my pace back down to a sub-10 min mile. The elation of almost finishing started to kick in as I caught sight of the 800 metres to go sign. By 400 metres elation turned to emotion, and I felt on the verge of breaking into tears as I crossed the line at 4h25m, cap in hand and pumping my fists for the cameras.</p>
<p>What an experience. £3,000 of sponsorship and 500 km of training had paid off. I nailed my target time and had one of the best days of my life.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Just a few short runs in the final week of training. Had a Thursday night 4 mile commute home, and will be popping out for a final 2 miles this afternoon, in preparation for tomorrow&#8217;s big day.</p>
<p>Pretty sure I&#8217;m all prepared, have stocked the fridge with lots of healthy grub and set out my wet and dry weather running gear for the morning. After almost two week&#8217;s stuffing myself with pasta and comparatively little exercise, honestly I can&#8217;t wait to hit the road and start burning off the carbs.</p>
<p>Had a little motivational boost from the legendary Paula Radcliffe at the end of Thursday&#8217;s run. Apparently I&#8217;ve just tripped the 500km training barrier, so she popped-up on the Nike+ with a message of congratulations. Very cool, and a good reminder to take plenty of bathroom breaks before the starting line, otherwise may also find myself needing a wee in front of millions of people on national TV!</p>

<p>Just an easy ten miles looping around Limehouse, up the canal to Angel and then back through the City past St Pauls and home.</p>

<p>Felt great hitting the road after a week of stuffing myself with pasta. Was really energised, and actually had to fight to keep my pace down to the usual  10 min/mile marathon target, rather than letting rip and risking injury.</p>
<p>Have been exercising with the background concern that I might have micro-fractured my right heel sometime in the last month, but it felt great today and I&#8217;m pretty sure it&#8217;s going to be fine on the day next week.</p>

I recall thinking it was a long 35 odd minutes last year, but honestly now after all this training it hardly seems worth pulling my trainers on for such a short hop!   <img src='http://hallard.co.uk/running/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /><br />
Carried an Orange Lucozade Sport for hydration (the sponsored drink that&#8217;ll be available along the marathon course every 5 miles) and one of the snack bars I bought yesterday. It was a little tricky eating while running, trying to balance chewing and breathing (!) - and I think just digesting the bar must take a bit of effort, but I&#8217;m hoping that the net result will be an increase in energy reserves that&#8217;ll be needed for the second 13 miles.</p>
<p>Couldn&#8217;t really spot any the difference in stamina over such a short distance, so I&#8217;ll be giving this a go again on the weekend long run. I did notice however that I was feeling a little queasy by the time I got home, and think it may have been the Lucozade rather than the grub, so most likely I&#8217;ll be skipping that on race day and depending on water and the gels I&#8217;ve been using in training.</p>
<p>Finally, don&#8217;t forget to stop by the spectating page from time to time. I&#8217;ve just updated it with some meeting points, and there&#8217;ll be a photo or two of my running kit going up on Sunday.</p>

If I can persuade Kat to pop downstairs with the camera, I&#8217;ll also update it with a picture or two of my running kit this weekend when I go for my final (shorter) long run.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll also be using this last proper run to test drive a shopping basket full of dietary supplements I bought from Waitrose on the way home this evening. All the advice I&#8217;ve read says it&#8217;s critical to not try anything new on race day, so although it&#8217;s a little late in the game I&#8217;ll be trialling a pre-race breakfast of super-caffinated coffee and chicken breast, and taking a variety of food stuffs with me when I run.</p>
<p>Apparently it&#8217;s best to keep the glycogen stores topped-up throughout the race, and at under 100 calories each the go-gels just aren&#8217;t sufficient, even if I&#8217;m glugging one every recommended 5 miles. So this weekend I&#8217;ll be out running with a backpack full of energy bars and a banana in my pocket&#8230;</p>

<p>With just two weeks to go until Marathon Sunday, I have to admit to bring pretty happy with my last long training run. Same route as last week, broadly circling most of Inner North London, with an added loop back along the Thames at the end to give me the additional mile over Bank Holiday Monday&#8217;s attempt.</p>
<p>On a recommendation from a colleague and co-runner Matt, I enjoyed the &#8220;Marathon Fuelling&#8221; episode of Steve Runner&#8217;s excellent podcast. Also subscribed to the twoplustwo poker podcast, so doubled-up my physical training with some mental training from Daniel Negreanu and Brian Townsend. All in all, rather a good day&#8217;s work!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thanks to jet-lag and an Asian body-clock I managed to spring out of bed at 6am on Bank Holiday Monday for my penultimate long-run before Marathon day on the 13th.</p>
<p>Was somewhat depressing to return from 30C Thailand to a sub-zero London and heavy snow over the Easter weekend, however this was more than made-up for by the opportunity to run in tolerable temperatures, and the secluded beauty of the snow-encrusted quiet streets and parks of our capital. I have a particularly vivid memory of the Hyde Park bandstand, slowly being covered with big fat snowflakes as I trotted past somewhere in mile 4.</p>
<p>As this was the penultimate long-run, I set out to break my distance record and notch-up 19 miles. Used my previous route through St James&#8217;s Park / Green Park / Hyde Park / Regent&#8217;s Park / Victoria Park, and finished it off with a last leg down to Limehouse basin, and then the three miles home along the river. The route turned-out to be perfectly estimated, as I just had to overshoot my door-step by another 20 metres up to the riverside to achieve my goal. This was the same route I &#8216;discovered&#8217; with Irfan and Ian in January (see <a href="http://hallard.co.uk/?p=39">previous blog entry</a>), so this time I was determined to complete it rather than allowing injury to stop-play at the 13 mile point.</p>
<p>Writing this run up on Tuesday I note that the usual aches and pains are rather subdued, perhaps as a result of finally getting a decent mileage into my legs. Nikeplus is showing 270 miles (over ten marathons!) run since I started training, so maybe that&#8217;s finally starting to make a difference - despite my best efforts to eat and drink myself stupid in Thailand over the last three weeks!</p>
<p>I note that my time for the 19 miles was a pretty reasonable 3h11m. By the last mile my feet were really starting to ache, but I was still running a reasonable 10 min/mile pace. Allowing for a bit of slack-off in the last seven miles and subject to no major problems on race day, I&#8217;m relatively confident that I&#8217;ll achieve my 4h30m target for a first marathon. There&#8217;s just one more opportunity to verify this the coming weekend, then I have to taper off the training and start carb-loading for the big one.</p>
<p>By the way, I heard last week that Fiona (my delightful dentist) broke her leg skiing last month, and has had to pull-out of the 2008 marathon. I&#8217;m now reduced to looking-out for a colleague Lee Runciman, who&#8217;ll apparently be running London in a <a href="http://www.volumeload.com/wholesale_gadgets/gifts/borat_mankini.htm" target="_blank" title="Borat Mankini">Borat man-kini</a>. Fortunately he&#8217;s running a 3h30m pace, so I&#8217;ll at least not have to contend with the sight of his backside for too long if he does pass me somewhere in the field&#8230;</p>

Even with the help of the staff I could only get the treadmill set for a 90 minute run, so after some incredulous looks from the staff at my request for 3 hours I ended-up doing it in two parts.</p>
<p>To stave off the boredom of the treadmill, did the run while being entertained by a few ebook chapters from &#8220;The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes&#8221; by the excellent Arthur Conan Doyle. Elementary my dear Watson!</p>

<p>Not too much time to blog, but will just let anyone who&#8217;s reading know that I&#8217;m doing my best to keep the running going. Nothing much to speak of, but did manage a 10K on the treadmill in Bangkok and another 11K on the roads of Mae Hong Son a few days later on an afternoon run out with our tour guide, Sonn.</p>
<p>Was a pretty interesting opportunity to see how I fare in the heat. And it was <em>HOT</em>. A road route, but quite hilly; and every uphill stretch was <strong>tough</strong>. Sonn was clearly used to the heat, and not even carrying water. Whereas I had to ration the small bottle I was willing to carry so it&#8217;d last the whole hour or so.</p>
<p>In the end I feel it was a pretty reasonable performance, given the conditions. Met up with Kat and the rest of our party by the pool to cool down and glug a few recovery litres of water.</p>

<p>Another Sunday afternoon, another long run. This time a slightly unplanned trip West along the river to circumnavigate the parks. A full loop around St James&#8217;s Park, Green Park and the far side of Hyde Park. The pedometer was only reading 9.5 miles as I finished the loop and found myself about to hit the return leg, so picked-up another two laps of St James&#8217;s to make it a full 13.</p>
<p>Somewhat serendipitously I managed to find the perfect route around the lake to make one lap almost exactly a mile, and to pass the water fountain adjacent to the children&#8217;s playground. Will be a great place to setup some fartlek laps on a future long-run.</p>
<p>Was back on the old trainers for this week&#8217;s long run. Thanks to Runner&#8217;s Need&#8217;s excellent after sales service I was able to return the slightly used (see last week&#8217;s posting) Saucony&#8217;s that chewed up my in-step. The blister has healed by today, so I&#8217;ll be popping back on Tuesday to test drive a few new pairs of shoes. Am looking for something to correct my mild over-pronation, while maintaining an even pressure along the length of the foot.</p>
<p>Also test drove a few Go-Gel isotonic energy gel&#8217;s, the manufacturer&#8217;s website has this to say:</p>

<p>Thought they might be a bit of a waste of money, but actually did feel a pretty major boost of energy right through to the end of the run. In fact, coming back along the Thames on the last 2 mile stretch I kicked-up the pace and felt fantastic. Will definitely be buying an arm load of these tomorrow for further experimentation!</p>
