Spectating
If you’ve nothing better to do on Sunday 13th early afternoon, why not pop down to the river to give me a cheer and taunt me with a bottle of Corona as I stagger by.
In the expecatation that I’ll be broadly keeping to my planned 4h30m pace, and giving a bit of contingency to clear the crowd at the start, I’m expecting to pass key points on the route at the posted times.
There’s a rather nice interactive map available from the London Marathon website (click here) if you’d like to find a spot outside a pub somewhere enroute. I’ll be doing my best to run vaguely along the right-hand side of the road throughout the course, as that puts me on the outside as I go both ways along the Highway at miles 13 (grinning) and 22 (grimacing).
Kat’s organising a small gang of friends who’ll be boozing it up at Gordon Ramsay’s “The Narrow” on Narrow St as I pass around 12:30pm (click here for directions). They’ll be there from midday if you want to pop down and join them, nearest tube is Limehouse DLR.
Shelter have an official supporter point outside St Paul’s Church (not the cathedral!) on the Highway, at the crossover point of mile 13.5 (East) and 21.5 (West). If you tell them you’re there supporting one of their runners you’ll even get a free t-shirt!
Shelter are also throwing a post run party at mile 25 in Victoria Embankment Gardens, the green just next to Embankment tube on the riverside. I’ll be staggering back there after completing the race for a shower and massage. There’s some food and drink for official supporters, so please feel free to pop down and catch-up with me for a post-race chat.
Elsewhere along the course I may be a bit harder to spot, given that I’m not running dressed as either a dinosaur, giant playing card (thanks for that suggestion though Mike) or Womble. To give you some chance of picking my rather non-descript outfit out of the crowd of 30,000 runners, depending on the weather I’ll either be wearing black track-suit pants or long black shorts, with my sponsor Shelter’s running vest on-top.
